The 1943 Bronze Lincoln Cent: The Wartime Minting Mistake That Became a Million-Dollar Treasure
During World War II, even something as ordinary as a penny became part of America’s wartime effort. Copper was needed for ammunition, communications equipment, and other military supplies, so the U.S. Mint changed the composition of the Lincoln cent in 1943.
Instead of the familiar bronze alloy, the Mint produced cents from zinc-coated steel. The resulting coins were silver-gray and dramatically different from the pennies Americans had seen before.
But somewhere during that transition, a tiny number of bronze planchets—the blank metal discs used to make coins—apparently remained in the production equipment.
Those leftover blanks were accidentally struck with 1943 dies.
The result was one of the most famous rarities in American numismatics: the 1943 Bronze Lincoln Cent.
Why Was the 1943 Penny Made of Steel?
The change was driven by wartime demand for copper.
In 1943, the United States was deeply involved in World War II, and copper was considered strategically important. The Mint therefore experimented with alternative materials and ultimately produced Lincoln cents using steel coated with zinc.
Millions of these steel cents were struck.
But the normal bronze planchets used for earlier Lincoln cents were not supposed to enter the 1943 production run.
That’s what makes the bronze examples so extraordinary.
How Did the Bronze Error Happen?
The generally accepted explanation is that a small number of 1942 bronze planchets remained in Mint machinery or production areas when the Mint began striking the new 1943 cents.
When one of these leftover blanks passed through the presses, it was struck with the new 1943 dies.
Instead of producing another steel cent, the press created a bronze coin bearing the 1943 date.
The mistake was extraordinarily small in number, which is one reason the coins became so valuable.
