Part 2
One by one, I opened the remaining bundles of letters.
Each envelope held another chapter of Thomas’s life.
There were birthdays he had celebrated alone.
Christmas mornings spent quietly in the home he built.
Business victories that meant little because there was no one special waiting to celebrate with him.
And in every single letter, one thing never changed.
He always wrote to me.
Sometimes he described the changing seasons.
Sometimes he talked about the little café where we had shared our first cup of coffee as teenagers.
Sometimes he simply wrote that he hoped I was happy, wherever life had taken me.
He never blamed me for leaving.
He never complained.
He simply loved me from a distance.
As I continued reading, tears streamed down my face.
Inside the box were photographs as well.
Old black-and-white pictures of us smiling together as teenagers.
Photos from school dances.
A faded picture of us sitting on a park bench, laughing at something neither of us could remember anymore.
Then came the newer photographs.
My nursing school graduation.
A newspaper clipping from when I received an award at the hospital.
Pictures from charity events.
Even a photograph taken at my mother’s funeral years earlier.
I looked at Mr. Harlan, completely overwhelmed.
“How did he get these?”
The lawyer smiled sadly.
“Thomas never wanted to interfere with your life.”
He paused before continuing.
“But he quietly kept track of how you were doing. Whenever someone who knew both of you mentioned you, he was grateful just to know you were safe.”
I gently placed the photographs back into the box.
Every picture felt like proof that, although decades had passed, I had never completely disappeared from Thomas’s heart.
Mr. Harlan leaned forward.
“There is something else you need to understand.”
I nodded silently.
“Thomas never married.”
The words hung in the room.
“He loved you for the rest of his life.”
I covered my mouth as fresh tears filled my eyes.
“Instead of building a family with someone else,” Mr. Harlan continued, “he built a future that he hoped might one day protect you.”
According to the attorney, Thomas worked tirelessly for decades.
He started a small construction company that gradually became one of the most respected businesses in the county.
He invested carefully.
He avoided unnecessary debt.
He lived modestly despite becoming financially comfortable.
Then Mr. Harlan opened the thick legal folder he had brought with him.
Inside were carefully organized estate documents, investment records, property deeds, and years of updated legal paperwork.
Every document had been prepared with extraordinary care.
“He purchased a house in your name back in 1995,” Mr. Harlan explained.
I stared at him in disbelief.
“He also opened several investment accounts intended for your future and updated his estate plan every few years.”
I couldn’t find the words.
My entire life, I had believed Thomas simply disappeared after I left.
Instead, he had quietly spent decades planning for a future he wasn’t even sure would ever happen.
Mr. Harlan slowly closed the folder.
“But there was one legal obstacle.”
I looked at him anxiously.
“Because you and Thomas were never legally married, much of his estate could have been challenged by distant cousins through probate.”
He paused.
“That’s why he asked you to marry him.”
My heart skipped a beat.
“That one-week marriage wasn’t about changing his life.”
“It was about protecting yours.”
