Uneven Tan? A Dermatologist Explains What Those White or Red Spots Could Mean
Is your tan looking uneven, with small white or reddish spots appearing on certain areas of your skin?
You’re not alone.
What seems like a simple tanning problem can sometimes be related to a common skin condition. A dermatologist explains what may be happening and what treatment options are commonly used.
Why Do White or Red Spots Appear After Sun Exposure?
What could be more pleasant than looking in the mirror and noticing a beautiful tan, not only on your face but also across the rest of your body, after spending some relaxing time in the sun?
Of course, using sunscreen is an important part of protecting your skin from excessive ultraviolet exposure.
But sometimes, a tanning session doesn’t go quite as expected.
Instead of developing an even golden tone, some people notice small white, pink, or reddish patches appearing on the skin.
These spots can become especially noticeable after tanning because the surrounding skin becomes darker while the affected areas may not change color in the same way.
According to dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee, a possible explanation is a common skin condition known as tinea versicolor, also called pityriasis versicolor.
