For years, many people have slept with their bedroom doors wide open.
It feels comfortable. You can hear the kids more easily. Pets can wander in and out freely. Air seems to circulate better throughout the house. An open door can feel safer, more connected, and more convenient.
But home fire safety experts have highlighted a simple habit that may provide an important layer of protection while you sleep:
Closing your bedroom door.
A fire safety demonstration conducted by the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute showed a dramatic difference between bedrooms exposed to the same simulated house fire—one with the door open and one with the door closed.
And when a house fire happens at night, even a few extra minutes can matter enormously.
The Experiment That Changed How Many Families Sleep
In a controlled fire test, researchers exposed two nearly identical bedrooms to the same simulated house fire.
The only major difference?
One bedroom door was left open. The other remained closed.
The results demonstrated how significantly a closed interior door can affect the spread of heat and smoke.
The Open-Door Room
The bedroom with the open door was quickly exposed to:
- Intense flames
- Thick black smoke
- Dangerous toxic gases
- Extremely high temperatures
As the fire developed, conditions inside the room became increasingly dangerous.
