Demond Wilson Dies at 79: Remembering the Life, Career and Legacy of the ‘Sanford and Son’ Star

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Demond Wilson, the talented actor who became a household name through his unforgettable role as Lamont Sanford on the classic sitcom Sanford and Son.

Wilson died on January 30, 2026, at his home in the Palm Springs area of California. He was 79.

According to his longtime publicist, Mark Goldman, Wilson died from complications related to cancer. His family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of a man remembered not only as an actor, but also as an author, minister, husband, father and community advocate.

For generations of television viewers, Wilson will forever be associated with Lamont Sanford, the sensible and often frustrated son of Fred Sanford, played by comedy legend Redd Foxx.

But there was much more to Demond Wilson’s story than the character that made him famous.

His life included Broadway, television, film, military service, writing, faith and ministry.

Who Was Demond Wilson?

Demond Wilson was born Grady Demond Wilson on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia.

Although he was born in Georgia, he grew up in New York City, where his interest in performing developed at an early age.

Wilson began training in dance as a child and eventually appeared on Broadway. He also performed at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater.

Those early experiences gave him a strong foundation in performance before he transitioned into television and film.

His path to Hollywood, however, was interrupted by military service.

Wilson served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 and was wounded during his service in Vietnam.

After returning home, he resumed his pursuit of an acting career and began securing television roles.

Among his early credits was an appearance on All in the Family, an opportunity that helped open the door to the role that would ultimately define his career.
