Don’t Throw It Away Until You Read This
One morning while preparing breakfast, I cracked an egg into a bowl and noticed something unusual. Running through the egg white was a thick white string attached near the yolk.
At first, I thought something was wrong.
Like many people, I’d seen plenty of alarming posts online about spoiled food, parasites, and contaminated groceries. My first reaction was to wonder whether the egg was safe to eat.
Curious, I cracked a few more eggs from the carton. Surprisingly, none of them had such a noticeable white strand.
So what exactly was it?
After doing some research, I discovered that the answer was far less alarming—and actually quite fascinating.
The White String Has a Name
That white cord-like strand is called the chalaza.
Although many people mistake it for something harmful, it’s actually a normal part of every egg.
The chalaza is made of natural protein and acts like a pair of tiny support ropes that keep the yolk centered inside the shell.
Without it, the yolk would move around much more easily and could become damaged before the egg is laid.
It’s simply one of nature’s clever ways of protecting the egg.
