
Instructions
Step 1: Brown the Sausage
- Preheat a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
- Add the Italian sausage and cook 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides.
- Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
Step 2: Sauté Vegetables
- In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers and onions.
- Sauté for 5–7 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Add minced garlic and cook 1–2 minutes, until fragrant.
Step 3: Build the Sauce
- Stir in the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and kosher salt.
- Mix well so the vegetables are coated with the tomato sauce.
Step 4: Combine and Simmer
- Nestle the browned sausage back into the vegetable mixture.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 20–25 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the sausage is fully cooked.
Step 5: Finish and Serve
Serve hot with crusty bread, pasta, or rice.
Remove from heat and sprinkle chopped fresh basil over the top.
