Ingredients
The ingredients for this recipe are pretty simple.
For this cake, you will need the following:
¾ cup of unsalted butter, softened and cut into pieces
2 cups all-purpose flour
4 large eggs, at room temperature and separated
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
2 tablespoons vanilla extract (or 1 tablespoon if you want to make a chocolate cake)
3 tablespoons cocoa powder (or 2 teaspoons if you want to make a chocolate cake)
15 ounces German sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar (I always use Hershey’s)
Directions
for Making the Best German Chocolate Cake
To start, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Using a whisk, mix these ingredients together until they become one smooth mixture.
Next, cut the butter into small pieces and put it into the mixture. For this recipe, you’ll need 2 sticks of butter at room temperature that’s divided into two separate bowls (one for each part of the dish). If you’re using salted butter then you should use two sticks of unsalted butter in addition to the two sticks of salted butter.
After adding your butter to the mixture, beat it with an electric mixer on medium speed until it becomes light and fluffy.
Add in your vegetable oil next and beat on medium speed again until it becomes light and fluffy.
Lastly, add in some vanilla extract to taste as well as a little bit of sugar. This will help bring out some of that chocolate flavor found in chocolate cakes like this one. Now don’t forget to scrape down any mixing bowl that may have stuck-on batter from your previous additions!
