- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/2 cup of buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons of melted butter
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes.
- Roll the dough out to 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a doughnut cutter or a round cookie cutter and a smaller round cookie cutter to cut out the doughnuts.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F.
- Carefully add the doughnuts to the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
